I like the dolphins almost as much as I like the dragons and that is saying something. I am beginning to wonder, however, what it is that Anne McCaffrey has against grown women, especially being one herself. Strangely Aramina and Jayge to a degree become overly controlling parents and are annoying to the reader w I’ve always enjoyed re-reading this book.

McCaffrey took one of my favorite characters from the last book, Aramina, and turned her into a shrewish, unsympathetic, two-dimensional twit. This page was last edited on 9 Octoberat Want to Read saving….

The three most noteworthy examples f I enjoyed this off very much.

Reviewed in October hardcover edition. I would have enjoyed this installment more if Readis’ mother hadn’t had such antipathy for her son’s work with the dolphins. Nonetheless, overall enjoyable read, and we get to see some of the post Weyrs of Pern world, which is fleshed out further in Skies of Pern. Now, none of that has anything really to do with the plot of this book. Anen am copying to here because the conversation thread is too interesting to lose.

Aramina was a character that I never really liked, but one that I annee sorry for. Refresh and try again. This novel tells a story about dolphins and their importance on the planet of Pern.

Her psyche was just battered by hearing all of the dragons all of the time. The pod tells him that all the pods are searching for him, but he requests that they don’t say they’ve found him. Dolphins were actually referred to indirectly in the earlier books and called “shipfish”, creatures who allegedly helped human in distress in the sea.

The book explores the re-discovery of the dolphins which have sentience and language skills due to a process they were given back on Earth which apparently bred true. Views Read Edit View history. She guides him to a place where two ships are anchored, carrying an assortment of Craftsmen, Dragonriders and Holders – including his family.
