Borrows-N-Wants Sep 22, I picked this up after watching Mrs. So far the only woolrich I have read but I have two of the Blacks in queue. A woman befriends a wealthy newlywed couple on a train. I think Woolrich does take steps later in the novella to give a rationale to how the mistake could have come about and gives her a strong reason to maintain the fiction but it does require some pretty odd plot contortions to set everything in motion.

They give her a sense of belonging that she clearly has not experienced before. The only thing I have never bought is the ending and the only thing that keeps the novel from being perfect. And like a number of my favorite suspense authors Patricia Highsmith comes to mindhe wrote about troubled, passionate individuals who stumble into criminal activity. But woolriich did not murder Patrice, she just failed to correct the hospital staff of her true identity and I really couldn’t blame her.
I liked the bleak tone so I will seek these out!

The suspense is outstanding, as in all of Woolrich’s novels and stories. Thanks for the suggestions — I am excited to read Nightmare Alley which actually was the reason I picked up the set in the first place.
After Patrice hands Helen her wedding band so she can wash her hands in the rest room, the train crashes, killing the Hazzards, but Helen survives. We see the tenuousness of our own lives and happiness in Helen and Bill.
It is powerful stuff, underlined by the striking decision to return to the material from the start of the book at the end. I asked msn first! With a title like that, I needed to read this book.

She is rescued from the wreck and is identified as the dead woman because of the ring she had been wearing on her finger. We know from the start of the novella that Helen will end up married to him and that she will think him responsible for the murder and yet when we first meet him that unhappiness seems unlike him. I think it is time that Woolrich and the other great noir writers of the Thirties and Forties — men like James M.
